Six WICKED Performers Nominated for Drama Desk Awards; Jayne Houdyshell Receives Special Award

Six WICKED performers have been nominated for 2013 Drama Desk Awards.

Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour) has been nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Play, for her performance in FALLING. Ryan Silverman (former ensemble, u/s Fiyero – Chicago) has been nominated for Outstanding Actor in a musical, for his performance in PASSION. Stephanie J. Block (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour; former ensemble, u/s Elphaba – Pre-Broadway) and Lindsay Mendez (upcoming Elphaba – Broadway) have both been nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for their performances in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and DOGFIGHT, respectively. Andy Karl (former Fiyero – Broadway) has been nominated for Outstanding Featured Actor in a musical, for his performance in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. Annaleigh Ashford (former Glinda – Chicago, Broadway; former ensemble, u/s Glinda – 1st Ntl. Tour) has been nominated for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, for her performance in KINKY BOOTS.

Jayne Houdyshell (former Madame Morrible – 1st Ntl. Tour, Broadway) has received a Special Award “for her artistry as an exceptionally versatile and distinctive Broadway and Off-Broadway performer.”

The 58th Annual Drama Desk Awards will take place on May 19 at Town Hall.

Murney and Thompson Set for THE WIZARD AND I: THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ

Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour) and Jennifer Laura Thompson (former Glinda – Broadway) will perform in THE WIZARD AND I: THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ at the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall 5/16-5/18. Ms. Murney and Ms. Thompson will be accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra Pops, conducted by Steven Reineke. This concert celebrates the 65th birthday of WICKED composer, Stephen Schwartz as well as the 10th anniversary of WICKED.

Show times will be May 16 at 7 PM and May 17-18 at 8 PM.

Kathy Fitzgerald (former Madame Morrible – Broadway), Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour) and WICKED composer Stephen Schwartz will celebrate Ben Vereen (former Wizard – Broadway, Chicago) in MAGIC TO DO on May 20 at LaGuardia Arts High School in Manhattan. LaGuardia is honoring Vereen with the school’s first annual LaGuardia Arts Hall of Fame. The 7:30 PM evening will feature musical performances by Broadway stars and students from the high school.

Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour) and Jennifer Laura Thompson (former Glinda – Broadway) are set to perform at the New York Pops Tribute for Stephen Schwartz (composer/lyricist) on April 12, 2013 at Carnegie Hall.  According to Playbill, the concert “will showcase Schwartz’s prolific career from stage and screen, including “Magic To Do” from PIPPIN, “Colors of the Wind” from POCAHONTAS, “The Spark of Creation” from CHILDREN OF EDEN, as well as songs from WICKED, including ‘The Wizard and I’ and ‘For Good.’”

Other performers include Jeremy Jordan and Norm Lewis.

Murney & Moran to Perform in Actor’s Fund Production of OUR TOWN

Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour) and Martin Moran (former Dr. Dillamond – 2nd Ntl. Tour) will both be performing in the Actor’s Fund Benefit Reading of OUR TOWN, to be held March 4, 2013. Ms. Murney & Mr. Moran will be performing as Mrs. Soames and Simon Stimson, respectively.

Three “Wicked” related individuals will be appearing at FROM BROADWAY WITH LOVE: A BENEFIT CONCERT FOR SANDY HOOK on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 7:00 PM at The Palace Theater in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Stephen Schwartz (composer of WICKED) will be appearing, and additionally, two performers from WICKED will be appearing - Victoria Matlock (former Elphaba, s/b Elphaba – 1st Ntl. Tour) and Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour).

Tour; original s/b Elphaba, u/s Nessarose – Broadway), Carrie Manolakos (former s/b Elphaba – San Francisco, 2nd Ntl. Tour), and Julia Murney (former Elphaba – Broadway, 1st Ntl. Tour) will perform in the upcoming CITY OF HOPE: BROADWAY BLOWS BACK concert. This event was originally scheduled for November 26, but has since been postponed until December 10. This concert will be performed at the Broadway company of WICKED’s home, the Gershwin Theatre.
