Today we have a fan interview from Katrin Grzybeck, a German native who is currently residing in the Netherlands. She has seen the show three times between the Broadway and German productions. Check it out below!
Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
It is really hard to say who is my favorite Elphaba. I saw Julie Reiber, Willemijn Verkaik and Mandy Gonzalez live and I adore all three of them. Each of them played the role very differently from the other but yet they were all amazing. If I had to decide I would say Julie Reiber is my favorite because she was the first Elphaba I saw and that makes her special to me.
Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
My favorite Glinda is Laura Woyasz. Her voice is unbelievable. And her chemistry with Mandy wasamazing. She was just wonderful as Glinda. She made it her own.
Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
Mandy and Laura. Their interaction during Popular was hilarious. And For Good was really emotional.
What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Janina Tippl (Nessarose in Oberhausen). She is the best Nessa I have seen. I loved her acting and her voice. Alex Brightman’s Boq is adorable.
Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
Of course, Julie and Laura. And I saw the Glinda s/b in Germany, Valerie Link, who was just amazing too. Her soprano seemed so effortless. I also adore Anthony Galde’s Dr. Dillamond.
Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
I did not stagedoor when I saw Wicked back in 2008 on Broadway. So this August was my first time stagedooring on Broadway. And I met Alex Brightman, PJ Benjamin, Anthony Galde, Laura Woyasz and Mandy Gonzalez. They were all just very nice. But the nicest person was Mandy, who I gave a belated Birthday Card which started a conversation and she was just so nice. She really took quite
some time to talk to me which meant a lot to me.
What was your favorite time seeing the show?
The third time I saw the show because I was really looking forward to seeing the Broadway cast again. And Mandy and Laura were just wonderful as was the whole cast.
Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
Next to Normal. I have to saw I never saw the original cast. I only saw the production twice this August. The complete cast is outstanding. And the show touched me so much. It is truly a must-see show.
The Pirate Queen. I adore the music. It is such a wonderful cast album. I hope it’ll get a revival at some point somewhere.
Legally Blonde. The first show I ever saw on Broadway. I love the story and music. This show means a lot to me. And I think it has a wonderful message for the audience.
Which “Wicked” alumni/current cast member’s work outside of “Wicked” do
you admire most?
Julia Murney, Stephanie J. Block, Lisa Brescia and Sebastian Arcelus. I adore their voices and acting so much.
