Fan Interview: Nikki C. Espinosa

Today, we have a fan interview from Nikki C. Espinosa. She is a Texas based fan of the show (though she relocates quite frequently due to the military) and has seen the show a whopping sixty-eight times all over the US, and in London and Germany. Check out her fascinating interview below!

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
I’ve seen 18 different Elphabas and honestly it’s very hard to pick. I would say though that it’s a tie between Marcie Dodd and Willemijn Verkaik because both ladies really embody the character and what she goes through on her journey. They also have an amazing set of pipes to back up their stellar acting of the role. I rank acting over vocals though so for me I’d rather see an Elphaba that can act the hell out the role rather than just sing it well. I think these two ladies have the whole package. There are many more that I truly enjoyed as well, so just narrowing it down is honestly difficult. Other standouts for me would be Carmen Cusack, Nicole Parker, Julie Reiber, & Lisa Brescia.

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
I’ve also seen 18 different Glindas & Katie Rose Clarke is definitely my favorite. She is everything that I would want in a Glinda. She is funny (spontaneous & quirky), heartbreaking at times (you can really feel her Glinda), and shows just the right amount of vulnerability and growth that I like to see in a Glinda. I’ve never enjoyed another Glinda as much as her, although there are many others that I do really love. I just think she is in a league of her own.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
I would say it’s a tie between Carmen Cusack/Katie Rose Clarke & Nicole Parker/Alli Mauzey

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
I really love Barbara Robertson’s Madame Morrible (she’s my favorite in the role) and I also love Rondi Reed as Morrible. My favorite Fiyero by a landslide is Richard H. Blake. I love Summer Naomi Smart’s Nessarose. Cristin Boyle, Lindsay K. Northen, & Michelle London were always ensemble standouts to me.

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
For Elphaba I would say my favorite understudies seen were Stephanie Torns & Merideth Kaye Clark; for Glinda I would say Meggie Cansler, Laura Woyasz, & Cristin Boyle; for Fiyero I would say Brad Bass & Kyle Dean Massey; for the Wizard I enjoyed Paul Slade Smith; for Nessarose I would say Laura Dysarczyk; My favorite Boq understudies seen were Adam Sanford & Brad Simanski

Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
Wow, that is very difficult question since there are so many extremely nice people at stagedoor. Thinking back the ones that stand out in my head the most as being especially nice, fan friendly, and gracious would be  (in no particular order): Lisa Brescia, Nicole Parker, Julie Reiber, Dee Roscioli, Anthony Galde, Brad Bass, Barbara Robertson, Merideth Kaye Clark, Brad Simanski, Meggie Cansler, Cristin Boyle, Paul Slade Smith, & Lindsay K. Northen

What was your favorite time seeing the show?
It’s extremely hard to pick a favorite when I have enjoyed so many shows in the past, but I guess I would say seeing Marcie Dodd (Elphaba) with Laura Woyasz (Glinda) & Laura Dysarczyk (Nessa) at a performance back in 2008 with the LA sit down cast.

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
The shows I like the best are the ones that truly move me in some way, I feel a deep connection to for some reason, or just make me laugh and have a good time no matter how many times I’ve seen it. It’s hard to narrow it down to just a few so here are the ones that I would say have the most special place in my heart for various reasons (in no particular order): Next to Normal, Hair, Sweet Charity, Chicago, Legally Blonde, Sweeney Todd, Memphis, Side Show, La Cage Aux Folles, Sunset Boulevard, Miss Saigon, Parade, Spring Awakening, Billy Elliot, Xanadu, Chess, Rent, The Drowsy Chaperone, Pricilla Queen of the Desert, Ragtime, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (and many many more lol)

Which “Wicked” alumni/current cast member’s work outside of “Wicked” do you admire most?
Again there are many so it’s hard to pick. I really enjoy Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth in everything I’ve seen them do.

One Response to Fan Interview: Nikki C. Espinosa

  1. I haven’t seen Willemijn but you’re spot on correct about Marcie Dodd. Her acting is a transformation. She becomes Elphie and doesn’t blink. Truly amazing. Great taste!!!!
