Fan Interview: Hazel A.

Today, we are thrilled to share a fan interview from Hazel A., a San Francisco based fan of the show who has seen the show six times, all in San Francisco. Check out her thoughts below!

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
My favorite Elphaba would be between Vicki Noon and Eden Espinosa. Vicki because her voice always blows me away. I’ve seen her  2 1/2 times (1/2 because she covered Act 2 last minute for one of the shows I saw) and all the times I’ve seen her have left me breathless. Eden because of what she brings to the role of Elphaba is different from all other Elphaba’s I’ve seen. I absolutely love her facial expressions throughout the show and the emotion she puts into scenes.

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
My favorite Glinda… I’d have to say Natalie Daradich! I love how bubbly she was as Glinda and during the secret telling scene she jumps on her bed and lands flat on her face! I absolutely enjoyed watching her as Glinda!

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
I would probably say Vicki and Kendra, but I may be biased since they were my first Elphaba/Glinda!

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Etai BenSchlomo! I personally think he fits the role of Boq perfectly! I love how much feeling he puts into being Boq and the look on his face in every Boq/Glinda scene. It’s adorable! Annie Funke seems to catch my attention every time I’m watching any scene having to do with ensemble, especially in “Dancing Through Life” when she stands in front of Glinda when she’s doing the “Elphie dance” and the look on her face when everyone else starts doing it as well. I recently realized that Gregory Haney (who plays Chistery) is all over the place! One scene he’s Chistery and swinging on bars, the next he’s an Ozian Thanking Goodness with Glinda!

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
I haven’t seen many, but Angel Reda did an amazing job as Elphaba. As I mentioned before, Natalie was great as Glinda. I recently saw Neka Zang as Nessarose and I must say, she’s my new favorite Nessa! She was a wonderful Nessa, and her “Wicked Witch of the East” blew me away!

Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
I have to say Nicolas Dromard and Neka Zang!! Nicolas is always so nice at Stage Door and jumps right into a conversation with you! And he does really seem to remember everything about you. The last time I saw him, he asked my husband about the military thing which I didn’t think he would remember. And he’s always a pleasure to chat with! Neka Zang is the same way, she’s so easy to talk to and she’s really sweet!

What was your favorite time seeing the show?
My favorite time seeing the show… so far I’d have to say the last time I saw it since I scored second row seats and that up close, the show is much more amazing. You can see all the details on the costumes, the look on everyone’s faces, you can make out what other people are saying instead of hearing a bunch of mumbling. Like when Elphaba came out during the Ozdust ball scene, someone says “she could walk back through those doors!” and I didn’t catch that at any other show I’ve seen!

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
Only other shows I’ve seen is RENT and Grease, but both were the movie. I’m planning on seeing Peter Pan and a few other shows. I really want to see Spring Awakening!

Which “Wicked” alumni/current cast member’s work outside of “Wicked” do you admire most?
I don’t really keep up with much but I was a fan of Kristin Chenoweth in Pushing Daisies before I knew anything about Wicked and I remember thinking “wow I wonder if she ever considered a career in singing” when I heard her sing “Hopelessly Devoted To You” lol! I saw her episode in Glee, shes an incredible actress and she’s got a voice for someone that tiny! I’m looking forward to Idina Menzel’s appearance on Glee this coming season! Taye Diggs (The Best Man, House on Haunted Hill, Brown Sugar, The Wood, Equilibrium are all some of my favorite movies) has also been one of my favorite actors for years so imagine my surprise to find out not only was he in Wicked but he’s also married to Idina!
