Today, we have a fan interview from Roxanne, a rather well-rounded fan of the show, having seen four productions – three in the US and the West End Production. She lives in California – though ten of her shows have been seen in London. Check it out below!
Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
I honestly can’t choose between Kendra Kassebaum and Dianne Pilkington. They were both very funny without being too over the top, and then they really showed Glinda’s transformation in the second act. I saw Dianne 9 times, and she was always fantastic. I went to San Francisco only intending to see Wicked once, but loved Kendra so much that I had to go again the next night. They’re two pretty different Glindas, when compared to one another, but I wouldn’t change a thing about either of them.
Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
Kerry Ellis and Dianne Pilkington, with an honorable mention to Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty.
What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Caissie Levy and Eden Espinosa as Elphaba. Katie Rose Clarke and Megan Hilty as Glinda. Oliver Tompsett as Fiyero (love his voice!). Katie Rowley Jones and Natalie Anderson as Nessa. James Gillan as Boq (Scottish!Boq wins at life). Lenny Wolpe as The Wizard. My favorite ensemble member would be Nadine Cox, loved watching her!
Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
Vicki Noon (s/b) and Sabrina Carter (u/s) as Elphaba. (I had the fortune to be at Sabrina’s first full performance, and completely loved her!) Emily Rozek (s/b) as Glinda. Andy Mace as The Wizard.
Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
I can’t choose just one, because just about about everyone was extremely nice, but Oliver Tompsett, Megan Hilty, and Teal Wicks are some standouts. Oh, and if it counts (I met him after he did a concert at my school), Stephen Schwartz.
What was your favorite time seeing the show?
Either LA’s closing night (January 11, 2009) or the last cast change in London (May 9, 2009). In LA the atmosphere from the crowd was amazing, and the performances were great from everyone. In London I was thrilled to be seeing Kerry again (the last time I’d seen her was February 2008, and I didn’t think she’d still be with Wicked if/when I managed to return to London), and even more thrilled to be able to witness her final (epic) performance.
Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
[title of show], In the Heights, Next to Normal, The Last 5 Years, Sister Act, Legally Blonde
Which “Wicked” alumni/current cast member’s work outside of “Wicked” do you admire most?
Probably Kerry Ellis. I went to the first and last night of her Great British Songbook concerts, and even with my high expectations, she still blew me away! I can’t wait until she finally releases her album.
